Mission
The mission of the Ora L. Brown Early Literacy Foundation (in honor of the mother of Kenia Brown) is to provide free early literacy reading and writing materials to adopted and foster care children in the age groups of pre-kindergarten through kindergarten.
Ora L. Brown
Ora L. Brown worked for over 30 years as the director of the Fort Pierce Child Development Center, a grant funded partnership between the United States Federal Government, the Coca-Cola Company, Inc and the Agricultural and Labor Program, Inc. Now, the George W. Truett Family Services Center, continues to provide low-cost childcare services to families.
As a baby, Kenia attended the Fort Pierce Child Development Center, as her birth parents were citrus migrant workers. Ms. Brown fell in love with her as teachers kept telling her Kenia was her twin. Through a series of God’s will events, Kenia was privately adopted by Ms. Brown when she was thirteen months old. By the time Kenia was three years old, Ms. Brown had taught Kenia to read, write and encouraged her love of reading by providing dictionaries, encyclopedias and a treasury of classic literature. She states, “Kenia always loved to read and write. She was reading novels and writing paragraphs at an early age. She also had quite an imagination and every night requested I read, Marvin K. Mooney Will You Please Go Now! by Dr. Seuss.”
Kenia also loved the Sweet Pickles series, a A-Z encyclopedia of dogs and a circa (blue) World Book Encyclopedia set from the 1960 or 70’s.
Kenia spent an incredible amount of time outside with the “Robinson Boys Next Door” playing baseball and football. After Ms. Brown taught her to ride a bicycle and skate, Kenia was enrolled in annual swimming camps at Indian River Community College. Ms. Brown also encouraged Kenia’s love of science by providing glass jars for Kenia’s growing grasshopper collection as she was prone to catch the insects and keep them for observation.
The Ora L. Brown Early Literacy Foundation is in the beginning phases to secure tax-exempt status as a non-profit 501(c) (3) so continue to check for updates.
